The most recent delivery of produce grown at the Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County (TJG) was taken to the Greene County Christian Action Resource Center (ARC) for distribution to clients on Wednesday. During recent weeks more than 70 pounds of fresh vegetables were given to the ARC by the gardens, according to Becky Greiner, TJG gardener, (pictured, left, with ARC volunteer Shirley Haupert.)
The produce distribution will continue as long as the harvest lasts.
Since the opening of the TJG Education and Welcome Center, the location of the Greene County Chamber & Tourism office, more than 600 visitors have signed the guest register. “Of course we know there are many other tourists who don’t sign in but we are thrilled with this level of interest in the gardens and the welcome center,” Greiner said. A recent bus tour and meeting brought in about 75 more visitors.
The Tuesday Talks at noon each week through Sept. 12 bring even more interest to the gardens. A variety of subjects are covered and upcoming ones include fairy gardens, Greene County history, farm to fork and grapes. “All are welcome to visit, stroll our path and attend Tuesday Talks,” she said.
Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County is a 501 (c) 3 organization and donations to it will be used for maintenance, further beautification and educational activities. Donations are tax-deductible and an endowment is being established for long term stability for the attraction. “We are grateful for the support the gardens have received from the community, “Greiner said. “We look forward to the future and the opportunity to share the beauty and the history of the gardens with many.”
